Nestled in the vibrant heart of George Town on Lorong Carnarvon, Oju Ojo stands out as one of the best Korean-inspired restaurants in Penang. This isn’t your usual Korean eatery; here, traditional flavors meet innovative twists, making for an unforgettable dining experience.
We kicked off our meal with some of their signature starters:
Potato Pancake (Gamja-jeon): This delightful dish comes with chives, spicy crab, and a variety of banchan (side dishes). The pancake was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfectly complemented by the spicy crab.
Gimbab: Inspired by Chef Jungsik Yim’s innovative New Hansik cuisine, this dish offers a choice of pork or beef. We tried both, and each bite was a burst of flavor, showcasing a modern take on the traditional Korean gimbap.
For the main course, we explored their unique rice dishes:
Kimchi Risotto: Combining duck confit, barley rice, cheese, and coconut cream, this dish is a fusion masterpiece. The rich, creamy risotto with a hint of coconut and the savory duck confit was simply divine.
Samgye-risotto: Featuring chicken leg, barley rice, cheese, and tomatoes, this dish offered a hearty and satisfying experience. The blend of ingredients created a comforting yet exciting flavor profile.
Our main dish was the:
Jjajang Pork: This dish features aged pork shoulder glazed with Szechuan pepper and goguma (sweet potato). The tender pork combined with the spicy, sweet glaze was a delightful mix of flavors that left us craving more.
To accompany our meal, we opted for a special beverage:
Durian Makgeolli: This unique drink is made with Cheongju, a refined version of makgeolli known for its clarity and premium quality. Infused with the distinct flavor of durian, it was a surprising yet delicious twist that elevated our dining experience.
The ambiance at Oju Ojo is dark and cozy, making it perfect for any kind of celebration or a casual dinner with friends, family, and loved ones. The warm lighting and stylish decor create an inviting atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy your meal.
Overall, our visit to Oju Ojo was a delightful culinary adventure. Whether you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion or simply enjoy a meal with good company, this restaurant promises a memorable dining experience with its innovative take on Korean cuisine.
