Kōgai: The Latest Authentic Japanese Dining Experience in Penang

Kogai penang

Kōgai is a new addition to the Tanjung Bungah, Penang dining scene, having opened just a few weeks ago. This Penang authentic Japanese restaurant is a hidden gem, led by a distinguished Japanese chef with over 40 years of experience.

He has served as an executive chef in some of the world’s finest five-star establishments, and his expertise is evident in every dish that leaves the kitchen.

From the moment you walk in, the ambiance sets the mood. With a relaxing atmosphere and strong Japanese vibes, it feels like a mini getaway to Japan.

Kōgai offers an extensive range of Japanese dishes, and during our recent visit, we had the pleasure of trying some of their chef-recommended signature items.

Here’s what we tried:

Salmon Mango Norigami – Crispy on the outside, the salmon was incredibly fresh, and the mango added just the right amount of sweetness.

Unagi Avocado Norigami – A delightful combination of flavors, creamy avocado paired with rich unagi.

Pepper Tuna Tataki – Fresh, light, and full of flavor.

Unagi Uramaki – My absolute favorite! The unagi was melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

Kaki Kombu Batayaki – The freshness of the oysters really shone through.

Ika Naruto-age – A perfectly fried squid dish with a flavorful punch.

Beef Enoki Roll – Tender beef wrapped around enoki mushrooms, grilled to perfection.

Kazan Ramen – A hearty bowl with rich broth and perfectly cooked noodles.

Goma & Matcha Ice Cream – Both were made from scratch, and you could taste the quality in every bite.

What really stood out to us, beyond the amazing taste, was the presentation. The chef takes great pride in how every dish is arranged, with attention to detail that makes the dining experience even more special.

And here’s the exciting news! Due to popular demand, Kōgai has introduced lunch sets! These lunch sets offer incredible value without sacrificing taste, making it a perfect spot for a midday meal. We tried:

  • Gyoza Ramen Set – A generous portion of ramen with crispy, juicy gyoza on the side.
  • Salmon Mentaiyaki Set – Big, flavorful, and perfectly cooked.

The portions were huge, the flavors were fantastic, and the price was surprisingly affordable for the quality you’re getting.
