Kogai’s New Kakigori Menu is a Must-Try in Penang!

Kogai Penang

If you love Japanese food as much as we do, then you’ll definitely want to check out Kogai, one of our favourite authentic Japanese restaurants in Penang! Located at Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Kogai has always impressed us with their high-quality dishes, and now… they’ve just launched a brand new kakigori (Japanese shaved ice) dessert menu – and it’s all freshly handmade from scratch!

We were super excited to try all four flavours, and honestly, each one was a treat on its own:

🍵 Hojicha – If you love roasted green tea, this one’s for you! The homemade hojicha sauce, anko (sweet red bean paste), condensed milk, chewy shiratama, and a scoop of hojicha ice cream made this bowl rich and comforting.

🍵 Matcha – A classic done right! Pure matcha flavour with anko, condensed milk, shiratama, and their homemade matcha ice cream. Earthy, sweet, and just the right balance.

🍓 Ichigo (Strawberry) – This was so refreshing! The homemade strawberry purée, Hokkaido milk pudding, strawberry and yoghurt popping boba, and juicy fresh strawberries made every bite burst with fruity goodness.

🥭 Mango – Another fruity favourite! The homemade mango purée, creamy pudding, popping boba, and fresh mango chunks made this bowl bright, sweet, and super satisfying.

After dessert? We just had to order some of our favourite dishes too – how could we resist?

🔥 Aburi Salmon – Fresh Norwegian salmon, pan-seared to perfection and served with a citrusy sauce and sweet shoyu glaze. So good, it melted in our mouths.

🌮 Salmon Magi Norigami – Crispy seaweed tacos loaded with fresh salmon, mango, avocado, tobiko, crunchy veg, and a spicy mayo kick. Every bite was a flavour bomb!

🌮 Unagi Avocado Norigami – Another must-try! That smoky unagi paired with creamy avocado and crunchy veg was simply delicious.

🦀 Soft Shell Crab Karaage – Crispy, juicy, and addictive – perfect with a dip of sauce.

🍗 Tori Teriyaki – Juicy chicken glazed with sweet teriyaki, always a comforting choice.

🥩 Beef Enoki Roll – Thinly sliced beef rolled with enoki mushrooms, savoury and juicy – we loved the texture!

Everything paired so well together, especially with the refreshing kakigori desserts at the end. We left with happy hearts and full bellies! 💛
