Great news for coffee and dessert enthusiasts in Penang—Kommons has finally opened its second outlet, and this time, it’s right here at Gurney Walk on the first floor! If the name rings a bell, that’s because their first outlet is located in Ipoh at Travelodge Hotel. Now, we can enjoy their delightful offerings without traveling too far.
At Kommons, you’ll find an impressive selection of coffee, pure-brew coffee, chocolate drinks, matcha, and more. They also serve a variety of desserts, including pastries, croffles, and Swiss rolls. It’s a one-stop café for those craving indulgent treats and excellent beverages.
During our visit, we sampled several drinks and desserts that left us impressed.
Hot Milk-Based Coffee
A warm, comforting cup that’s perfect for a relaxing day. The coffee had a balanced flavor and a creamy finish.
Blueberry Blossom
This unique creation combines Ethiopia Sidamo cold brew with earl grey tea—refreshing and slightly floral with a tea-infused twist that complements the coffee’s fruity notes.
Passionfruit Lemon
A refreshing blend of orange-infused cold brew, orange zest, passionfruit foam, and coconut water. It’s vibrant, zesty, and the tropical flavors shine through beautifully.
Pure-Brew Coffee
Crafted with a specially designed conical basket and a micro-thin double mesh, this preparation method enhances the coffee’s clarity and flavor. It’s our first time encountering this brewing technique in Penang, and we were impressed! The taste was clean, smooth, and aromatic—a must-try for coffee purists.
On the dessert side, the Cheesy Seaweed Croffle offered a savory twist with gooey cheese and hints of umami seaweed, crispy on the outside and soft inside. The Charcoal Green Tea Swiss Roll was light and airy, with a balanced earthy flavor from the green tea and a subtle smoky note from the charcoal.
Classic pastries like the Pain Au Chocolat impressed with their flaky, buttery layers and rich chocolate filling, while the Cronigiri—a creative fusion of croissant and onigiri—surprised us with its unique texture and delightful filling.
The ambiance at Kommons is equally inviting, with its modern and cozy setup making it ideal for both work and casual hangouts. Whether you’re looking for a quiet corner to get things done or a place to catch up with friends, this café has you covered.
With its unique beverages, delicious desserts, and relaxing atmosphere, Kommons at Gurney Walk is a fantastic addition to Penang’s café scene. Don’t miss the Pure-Brew Coffee and Cheesy Seaweed Croffle—they’re definite highlights! If you’ve visited Kommons, let us know your favorites!
